New study shows excellent MRI readability post-Magtrace surgery

A study published in the European Journal of Surgical Oncology (EJSO) has demonstrated how you can use Magtrace for sentinel lymph node biopsy, while maintaining MRI visibility.
The PostMag Study, a research initiative led by physicians from Sweden and the UK, evaluated the impact of Magtrace, a superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) tracer, on MRI readability after breast-conserving surgery.
Across four independent radiologists, 159 MRI’s were assessed from 97 patients, up to 5-years after initial breast cancer surgery with Magtrace.
Here were some of the key findings:
- Magtrace-related artifacts are significantly less common with a peritumoral injection technique.
- The study discovered MRI artifacts significantly reduce when injection is image-guided (9.1%) rather than free-hand (73.7%).
- In only 1/159 MRI’s (<1%) was the image deemed “impossible” to interpret.
- For patients that experienced recurrence (6), all could be detected on follow-up.

"This prospective cohort study suggests a targeted peritumoral injection can result in the removal of SPIO during lumpectomy and address concerns for artefacts on postop MRI follow-up, in selected patients it may be required."
